Nicoli – Drums
Whenever going to see a live show there is always a concussive bewilderment which encapsulates the mind by witnessing masterful drummers. They pound through our souls the beats that make us move through time, and dazzle our ears with sizzling high-hats and tolling cymbals. Such an inducing state of the senses can be experienced from the drummer of The Secret Post, Nick Arena (aka Nicoli).
Born and raised on the East-Side of Tulsa Oklahoma, Nicoli found his inspiration to become a musician in a home of music lovers. On a daily basis, he found himself intrigued by his mother and father’s records which lined the living room walls. Classic rock tunes from the likes of Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Stevie Ray Vaughn filled the house. This exposure to some of the greatest bands in history nurtured young Nicoli’s musical senses, and provided the foundation on which he has built his appreciation for music.
But Nicoli’s influences didn’t stop with the classics. Perhaps his biggest inspiration musically, comes from his older brother and TSP front man Zachariah. Through his brother and other close friends in his life, Nicoli found his love for punk rock and post-punk bands. The Ramones, The Misfits, The Casualties, Rancid, The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, The Chameleons…the list goes on. Deftones, Mudvayne, Slayer, Tool, Alice In Chains, STP, etc… You get the idea.
From all of these bands Nicoli picked up on one instrument, or set of instruments rather, the drums. Upon asking Nicoli why he chose to play the drums over other instruments he had this to say:
“I chose to play drums because I was always fascinated with the beat of my favorite music. I envied drummers; they are the backbone of music. I always tapped on things whenever I listened to music, I could just feel it. Whenever I eventually got to play on a drum set, it seemed to just come naturally. I really enjoyed it and decided to pursue it. I joined the school band so I could learn more about it and I talked my parents into buying me the cheapest drum set available.”
Since the days of school bands and beginner drum sets, Nicoli has gain much ground in mastering his talent and his gear. He currently plays on a set of Ludwig drums complemented with Zildjian cymbals, but is looking forward to yet another graduated step towards high quality gear into the near future. We can only wait to see what he has in store for us.
It is always interesting to find out from the musicians perspective what it’s like to be in the band. The Secret Post has played many shows with different members and several venues across the country. I asked Nicoli; What Secret Post performance sticks with you the most and why is it so impressed in memory?
“My favorite secret post show would have to be our CD release show at the Vanguard in Tulsa, OK. The crowd energy was tremendous; it’s incredible how much our audience contributes to a creating a kick ass show. We really feed off of that energy, that night was amazing, I’ll never forget it.”
What presents the biggest challenge being the drummer for TSP?
“My biggest challenge would have to be learning to understand the “mouth drums” my brother communicates to me to explain what he hears in his head for new song ideas… (Laughter)”
I think we have a good opportunity for you to give a shout out. Is there anyone out there you’d like recognize?
“I would like to give a shout out to my lovely girlfriend Erin, for believing in me and loving me like nobody ever has before. She is my rock; she keeps me out of trouble. I love her tremendously.”
“I would also like to give a shout out to you, Tap. You have always been like a brother to me, dropping knowledge and wisdom on me and having intimate, intelligent talks with me about life. Not to mention all the time you were my right hand man on stage, keeping the rhythm on lock-down, feeling my beat and grooving with me. I love you Tap!”
Haha…Thanks brother, love you right back. I miss laying down the groove with you man. Keep up the hard work.
